So after spending four and a half hours at the hospital today, we figured out how very wrong we all were.
This morning she had a fever of a 103.4, and she'd stopped eating and started puking. So they took her back, took blood, took x-rays, and a urinalysis. (Which, by the way you guys, in case you forgot, I still have not lost my ability to diagnose infections by how the pee looks, and hers was definitely infected.)
So, yeah, that's what it was. A very early UTI. Also, her system was backed up, (you could see the poop in the x-rays, which was kinda interesting,) and apparently her kidneys were swollen.
What's really kinda sad, during the exam, the doctor asks us if we've ever had any history of bladder/kidney infections, and how much they progressed. And my mother tells about my past two, and the doctor turns an eye on me like this whole thing is my fault. WELL IT'S NOT LIKE SHE CAUGHT IT FROM ME, JESUS CHRIST.
So, they took her back into the observation room and gave her IV fluids, which was a fucking hassle and a half. The nurse sitting in the observation room managed to stick her four times, got blood everytime, and blew the IV everytime. I felt so sorry for this lady too, because everytime she came over to my sister, she'd start balling, which of course makes things harder, and you know, she really did try to get that IV, and the doctor even came over and tried to help, (which if you ask me, the doctor watching how you do things always made things worse, at least it did during my extern, because FUCK WHAT IF I SCREW THIS UP???) Well, finally, the nurse called the senior nurse in, and she got the IV in on the first try. ffffffffffff.
So then we got to sit there for two more hours while they pumped everything into my sister. After that, they told us we could all go home to tonight, just bring my sister back tomorrow. They left the heplock in her hand and wrapped it up in this netted sock thing, and tied it to a splint.
We get to come back at nine tomorrow. If they decide she needs more fluids, then they're going to have to admit her to the hospital or the ER. I don't think that they're going to have to, though, she's already looking good. She's taking and eating, and I hope she's pooping, but I don't know that for sure. (I'll likely get that report tomorrow.)
So yeah. I'm tired. I'm probably going to hit the sack in a bit here.
